Custom Cabinetry

After completing the Streeterville Apartment renovation, I was approached by friends of my client—who lived in the same building, just a few floors up in an identical apartment layout—to redesign their kitchen and create a custom built-in unit for the living room.

The main goals for the new kitchen were to increase storage and improve functionality, while achieving a look that felt both modern and timeless. The original cherry-finish cabinets were replaced with warm white custom cabinetry, instantly brightening the space. We swapped the standard stainless steel sink for a fireclay farmhouse sink, adding charm and character.

During demolition, we removed the existing cabinets and a small pantry that had been tucked behind a door. To make better use of the available space, we added stacked upper cabinets with glass fronts for a lighter, more open feel. The hard-to-reach cabinet above the refrigerator was transformed into a vertical storage solution for baking sheets and trays. We also installed a wine fridge—visible from the dining area—with a pull-out bottle drawer beside it for easy access and display.

In the living room, we designed a new 12-foot-long built-in unit that blends storage and display. It features open shelving for books and decor, closed cabinets for hidden storage, and three brass picture lights above to highlight the shelving and add a soft glow.

And of course, we didn’t forget the dogs! Originally, they had a small crate that served as their safe space. We thoughtfully incorporated a cozy nook for them by converting the lower right cabinet into a dog den, complete with brass mesh doors for ventilation and style.
