Space for Art Lovers

This Lincoln center apartment had extraordinary bones: abundant natural light, panoramic city views, and generous proportions.  The two units were combined by the previous owners and haven’t been renovated since. The original home reflected old-style luxury: mirrored walls, an oversized whirlpool tub that opened directly to the primary bedroom, multiple floor level changes, and lots of marble.  My clients, an art lover couple, asked to improve the layout, modernize the space, add more storage solutions, and create a cohesive clean design with lots of places to display their impressive art collection.  

The new layout started from the entryway, were a long and narrow hallway was broken down by turning part of the wet bar (previously the other apartment’s kitchen) into a closet space with build-in bench and a console table. At the end of that hallway, a wall was created to showcase a piece of art, replacing the prior door of the washer & dryer closet, which was relocated.

In the kitchen, we eliminated the floor elevation and canceled the curvy island. Instead, we created a new island with straight lines that defined the enlarged kitchen area and made it the social heart of the home, seamlessly connecting cooking, dining, and family life.

We selected wide engineered oak planks that were installed parallel to the window to create a feeling of openness and flow – from the dining to the play area and the living room.

The couple, who found out during the renovation that they are expecting a baby, used the space between the dining and living room as an open play area for their toddler.

The primary suite became a quiet retreat with a spa-inspired bathroom, replacing the raised platform oversized with a double sink, warm natural materials, generous storage, and clean lines.

Throughout the apartment, custom millwork, wide-plank white oak flooring, natural stone, fireclay tile, and carefully selected lighting establish a palette that is both contemporary and enduring. Color is introduced intentionally through furniture and artwork, allowing the architecture itself to remain timeless.

One of the greatest challenges - and opportunities - was balancing creative design with the day to day realities of family life, let alone with a toddler. Integrated storage, flexible living spaces, and a dedicated play area allow the apartment to evolve with its owners while maintaining a refined, uncluttered aesthetic.

The result is a home that meets the needs and desire of this family: a balance of elegance, informal design that supports everyday living, minimalist yet not cold, and emphasizing the outstanding art taste.
